Today we discussed Vernal Pools. These are early spring pools of water that are the nursery for so many creatures we have in our backyards. The pools host frogs, toads, salamanders, newts , bugs, snakes and more. After discussing these pools we went outside to explore. We brought microscopes, magnifying glasses, tweezers and containers. We investigated over, under, around and in logs and the yard in general. We then searched for the names of our finds in books and pamphlets. A great resource for these pools and outdoor exploration is, "A Field Guide to the Animals of Vernal Pools" by Leo P. Kenney and Matthew R. Burne.
